Oli Meese is a queer illustrator whose mixed media work seeks to portray the beauty which can be found in the mundane reality of queer life. In this series of illustrations, they reimagine the covers of lesbian pulp fiction paperbacks from the 1950's, elevating them from simple titillation for the male gaze, seeking instead to honour the real women who found refuge in these books when they felt otherwise alone in an unaccepting world. With bold compositions utilising a limited colour scheme, they take inspiration from classic film noir illustrations while also imbuing the pieces with a soft intimacy, representing the lived reality of lesbian experience. Their work is a love letter to queer women and the many ways in which they express love. Instagram: @yioxxe |
